5 Ways Toxic Productivity Might Be Hurting You

Have you ever felt overworked, burned out, or just totally had a breakdown? In today’s culture of toxic productivity, it’s scary how common it is for us to treat burnout like it’s ok - but it’s not. Think about it.

3 ESSENTIAL work from home boundaries

Boundaries are important in all walks of life but boundaries for a remote worker are VITAL.

It’s easy to fall into the habit of, “Just one more task today” or “Sure, let’s have a meeting this Saturday, my schedule is free” but that kind of thinking will put you on the fast track to frustration, and that remote life you thought sounded so great will turn into an endless hamster wheel of 24/7 work… which is NO BUENO.

How birthdays impact our mental health...thoughts from a licensed psychologist

Do you ever feel weird about your birthday?

Next week, I celebrate my last birthday in my thirties.

AKA my second covid birthday.

Otherwise known as, my 39th year of life.

Those of us who have celebrated a birthday since February or March of 2021 are going through our second covid birthday.

Last year, we told ourselves that we’d be able to celebrate as per normal in 2021.

The only problem is, the pandemic is still here, botching up everything and meaning that we’re putting off some of our plans and hopes for the second year in a row.

And this is leading to a strange sense of grief, perhaps grief that is buried beneath the surface, or sadness that rests on the tip of your tongue, difficult to fully understand or articulate.

Featured in Women’s Day Magazine

I am super excited to be celebrating my birthday and 39 years of life with all of you thanks to Women’s Day including me in their “Celebrate your Age” feature in the Summer 2021 issue!

We live in a world where often we are conditioned to fear growing older. And honestly, even though I’m a psychologist and know it’s all BS, sometimes I still feel afraid.

Getting to be a part of this feature reminded me that life, in all it’s messiness and imperfection, is a gift and it’s meant to be celebrated NOW, not waiting for when things are perfectly aligned.

I am nerding out in total giddiness over what I am about to tell you next. You can find this magazine (with me in the table of contents as well as a 2-page feature!) this summer wherever magazines are sold. Including my favorite place, Target. Call my Mom and tell her I’ve made it!

Thoughts From A Licensed Therapist: Meghan Revealing Her Struggle With Suicidal Thoughts is Tragic, and So Important

Yesterday, in their interview with Oprah, Meghan & Harry opened up about Meghan’s suicidal thoughts and Harry’s grave concern for her well-being during the intense scrutiny she received as a Royal. It was deeply troubling to hear about how dark Meghan’s thoughts were, at one point saying she “just didn’t want to be alive anymore.” Even more troubling, is that Meghan asked for, and was denied, mental health support in her time of need.

I am a licensed psychologist, and my brother died by suicide 12 years ago.

If you’ve been hitting a wall lately, it makes SO MUCH SENSE.

No big plans for 2021? It’s totally ok.

Are you feeling the pressure to set big fancy goals this year, but you haven’t gotten around to it yet?

If that’s you, it’s totally ok.

While it may be customary to set goals, pick theme words and intentions, and go wild with productivity at the beginning of the year, 2020 taught us that sometimes, things don’t go according to plan.

Sometimes, it’s better to throw the plan out and just take things as they come.

I’m chuckling to myself as I write this,

Toxic Positivity Explained on the Therapeutic Life Healing Podcast

Recently I sat down with my friend Eidit (pronounced Adeet) Choochage on her podcast Therapeutic Life Healing for Women to talk about Toxic Positivity. We explored the following questions:

  1. How do you define toxic positivity and toxic positivity culture in general? Can you share an example of what it could sound like?

  2. How can someone notice the signs that they are being negatively impacted by toxic positivity? And how can they respond to toxic positivity thereafter?

  3. How can toxic positivity impact relationships and what are some ways to respond to it in the relationship?
